Introduction

David Moursund started a periodical named the Oregon Computing Teacher in May 1974. In 1979 this became The Computing Teacher and in 1995 it became Learning and Leading with Technology. Moursund served as the Editor in Chief of this publication from its inception until he retired from ISTE in 2001.

During this time span, most issues of the publication contained an editorial or editor's message written by Moursund. Occasionally, a guest editorial was substituted. To a large extent, Moursund's editorials focused on timely but ongoing topics. They identified a problem and provided ideas on possible solutions to the problem.

This Web Page contains links to all of the editorials May 1974 through August-September 2001. Some of the editorials contain Retrospective Comments that Moursund added years after their initial publication.

1974-1985

All 53 editorials and editor's messages that appeared in Volume 1 # 1 (May, 1974) through Volume 12 # 9 (June,1985) were collected into a 1985 book was published by the International Council for Computers in Education (ICCE). The book also contains a little bit of the early history of ISTE. It is available free online.

Some readers will note that the first paragraph of this section indicates that there are 53 editorials, while the list below in numbered 1—54. The 1985 book had an error in numbering. The 1985 reprint of the book has a blank page inserted (and the blank page is listed as Editorial #36) so that the reprint looks roughly like the original book.

Here is a personal note from David Moursund written after his retirement from ISTE.

I established the Oregon Computing Teacher periodical in the Spring of 1974. In 1979, I changed the name of this periodical to The Computing Teacher when I established the International Council for Computers in Education. Later the name was changed again, to Learning and Leading with Technology. I served as Editor-in-Chief of this periodical until the end of March, 2001, and I have written about 170 editorials for it.

My formal employment with the International Society for Technology in Education ended at the end of March, 2001. I continued full time employment at the University of Oregon through the 2001-2002 academic year. I then entered into a five year program of "reduced tenure" in which I work 1/3 time for the University of Oregon.

As part of the agreement made when I left ISTE, I have permission to make all of my editorial messages available on my Website.

In addition, it was agreed that I could write an editorial for the September 2001 (Volume 29, Number 1) issue of Learning and Leading with Technology. This editorial is:
