Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a area of study in the discipline of Computer and Information Science for more than 50 years. It has made significant progress.
However, many of the problems being addressed in AI are very difficult for machines. For example, a human teacher can relatively easily examine a work-product done by a students, and provide formative evaluation feedback on the progress a student has made. This type of feedback achievement is well beyond the AI systems that currently (in 2007) exist.
Thus, over the full range of teaching and learning activities that require "understanding" or meaning-making, human teachers are far superior to computer highly interactive intelligent computer-assisted learning systems (HIICAL).
